History

St. Joseph's College (Autonomous) Jakhama is a Catholic institution of higher learning established and managed by the Diocese of Kohima, Nagaland. It is the first college established by the Catholic Church in Nagaland. It aims at imparting quality higher education that is based on the Christian vision of life. Catholic education stresses the formation of the whole person by recognizing and developing the vast potentialities latent in the student in a balanced manner, taking into account the student's socio-cultural context.

The College was inaugurated on 19th March 1985 at the Loyola School Campus, Jakhama, under the administration of the society of Jesus, with Pre-University Courses in Arts (including a Vocational Course) and Commerce. It was affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, in the same year. The College is now located in a spacious campus in Jakhama village, about 14 kms from Kohima, along the National Highway 2. Degree Courses in Arts (Bachelor of Arts) and in Commerce (Bachelor of Commerce) were started in 1988. BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) & B.Sc. (Bachelor of Science) were started in 2009 and 2012 respectively. The College also introduced Post Graduation(M.A) Course in 2018 with English deparment as the first PG Course. With the establishment of a University within the State of Nagaland in July 1994, the College is now affiliated to the Nagaland University. It is included in the List of Colleges under Section 2 (f) & 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956 and has been Re-accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with A Grade (CGPA 3.22). The management of the College is vested with the St. Joseph's College Society of the Diocese of Kohima. Besides the Diocesan Fathers who are in charge of the administration of the College, there are Religious sisters belonging to the Sisters of the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament (SABS), and Congregation of Mother Carmel (CMC), and Religios of Jesus and Mary(RJM) as members of the staff.

Establishment and Affiliation

St. Joseph's College (Autonomous), Jakhama is a Catholic Institution of Higher Education established and managed by the Diocese of Kohima, Nagaland. It is the first College established by the Catholic Church in Nagaland. The college was inaugurated on 19th March 1985 by General K.V. Krishna Rao (Rtd.) the then Governor of Nagaland at the Loyola School Campus, Jakhama, under the administration of the Society of Jesus, with Pre- University Courses in Arts (including a Vocational Course) and Commerce. It was then affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong. The College is now located in an environmentally friendly campus in Jakhama village, about 18 kms from Kohima, along the National Highway No. 2. The College started two undergraduate degree courses (BA & B. Com) in 1988. With the establishment of Nagaland University in July 1994, the College is now affiliated to Nagaland University. The Department of Business Administration (BBA) and B.Sc. were introduced in the year 2009 and 2012 respectively. The College also introduced Post Graduation Programme (MA) in the year 2018 with Department of English as the first PG course. /p>

Mission

  • The mission of St. Joseph's College is to form men and women who are intellectually alert, morally upright, religiously oriented, socially conscious, culturally distinct and nationally integrated.
  • To help the students to understand the meaning of life, their role in society, responsible citizenship, and selfless sacrifice to evolve a borderless society to promote common good.
  • To provide holistic formation by recognizing and developing the vast potentialities latent in the student in a balanced manner, taking into account the student's socio-cultural context.
  • To provide quality education, promote progress and development and give much attention to the marginalized sections of society.
  • To provide an atmosphere where there is no social conditioning of caste, class, gender, creed and other culture-linked prejudices.
  • The vast majority of students studying in the college are from schedule tribe background but students from other socially conditioned background are always welcomed to the college.
  • With high value for inclusive approach and practices the institution practices the values of pluralism, cultural and religious diversity, individual and collective freedom and respect for and appreciation of differences.
  • To take maximum measures to accommodate students coming from varied background without discrimination and provide opportunities for the students to engage in proactive measures and play a critical role in nation-building.

Vision

  • The vision of St. Joseph's college is to impart higher education in a Christian atmosphere to deserving students, and those belonging to the Catholic, Christian Communities, Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes and OBCs and thus help in the diffusion of knowledge and advancement of educational activities in all its branches including professional, cultural, social and moral education.

  • To take responsibility of imparting quality education and make it as the gateway to the socio-cultural and economic development of persons and nation.

College Emblem and Motto

"I am the light of the world" (Jn 8:12). "You are the light of the world" (Mt 5:14). In the crest, the light shining and sending its rays in all directions, is a symbol of Christ and his followers. Christians should receive and radiate the light of Christ. The candle, burning and melting itself, is a sign of selfless service.

The Mithun represents the cultural heritage of Nagaland, which the College will foster and develop.

The open book stands for knowledge in every field, inviting staff and students to explore and unravel the mysteries of nature and achievements of human beings, and thus to come closer to the Creator and one another.

The motto of the college is, “Arise and Shine.” The inspiration is taken from the Prophet Isaiah 60:1 where it says, “Arise, Shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” The prophet's message for us is to rise, grow and excel with the power of the Almighty.

St. Joseph, the ‘Just man,’ the faithful guardian of the family of Nazareth, an example of integrity and hard work, is the Patron of the College.

Mr. Winston Churchill, late prime minister of England seems to have remarked once, while speaking about India’s north east, he said, She is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle hidden in a mystery. North east with its hundred tribes and hundred tongues, with its rainbow people, with its angelic music and ethnic diversity presents a tough challenge to all of us who are working in the north east. After wide consultation and discussions the Catholic Church, critically understanding the need and ramifications of higher education took the challenging and decisive step to open the St. Joseph’s college in the heart of the tribal set up in 1985. Today the college has been accepted unequivocally as a trend setter and path finder in the sphere of higher education and remains as a towering leader among other higher educational institutions accredited to the Nagaland University.

The college offers regular and professional Under Graduate and Post graduate programmes. Realising the advantages of value addition programmes the college, has in the past five years, offered several add-on and enrichment courses. Taking into consideration the marginalized and the poor we have introduced the community college to take care and enhance the chance of the students who have been left behind in the cut-throat competitive world.

This multi-faculty and multi-faceted institution today has an enrolment of 3590 students, 95 faculty members and 21 office staff. Dr. Fr. George Keduolhou Angami is the Principal of the institution. The college envisages a holistic approach to education that not only ensures academic excellence, but also equips the youth to face the challenges in life, by fostering values, traditions, imbibing emotional maturity, and integrating attitudes and cultural contents. The college institutionalised value education and community extension services from the beginning. The counselling and mentoring service reaches out to everyone in need

The college has made remarkable strides in curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and has developed add on courses according to the demand and need. The college can boast of an excellent student support system, career guidance, counselling and library. The stakeholders, alumni, local bodies are an integral part of the college and make significant contribution to both infrastructural expansion and academic enrichment. The infrastructural and educational resources have been constantly expanded and upgraded with state of the art technology to meet the growing academic requirements. The use of technologyin administration, modern pedagogy and library has helped the quality of teaching-learning process. The revolution has changed the face of learning. This also has reinforced the campus culture of learn, excel and lead with the motto “rise and shine.’ In brief, all efforts are made to sustain and enhance quality through the blending of innovative measures and traditional tribal values.

As we strive to maintain the cutting edge quality and high performance the institution look forward to get a higher grade as a result of this assessment and then go on to become an autonomous institution to serve the people of Nagaland and north east in the near future.
