SJC (A) Jakhama Organises Seminar on Sustainable Development

A two-day national seminar on “Sustainable Development: Prospects and Challenges,” organised by the Department of Economics, St Joseph’s College (Autonomous) Jakhama began on November 10 in the college auditorium. 

The seminar is being attended by staff and students of the organising department and more than 50 speakers and educators from various academic disciplines across the country. The seminar is intended to spark conversation and educate the students about sustainable development and its various facets in India and the North-East.

Guest of honour, T. Mabemo Yanthan, Commissioner, Government of Nagaland and keynote speaker Prof Giribabu M, Professor and Head, Department of Economics Mizoram University, addressed the seminar.

Lt. Col. Sunil Kumar, Chakabama, Military Station was the special guest speaker who spoke on the topic, “Indian Army and Nation Building” highlighting the importance of nation building and how Indian army contributes towards social integration and security.

Yanthan, in his address, highlighted the importance of such a seminar to inspire and to brainstorm for ideas. He further discussed about the various sustainable growth in terms of the economy. Speaking from his personal experience, Yanthan said skills of the local people, the power of local social network, resources of public, private resources, and stories of our shared lives are the building blocks of social and economic sustainability.

Prof Garibabu, highlighted on issues and untapped resources of sustainable development pertaining to the North-East region and Nagaland. He dwelt on the issue of people not engaging themselves in the benefits offered by the banks. He further highlighted the various challenges to sustainable growth of India Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Principal Dr Fr George Keduolhou Angami. 

After the inaugural session, technical sessions commenced in the conference halls of the college. The technical session included an array of speakers tackling various topics including the path to sustainable development, rural tourism, addressing gender inequality in achieving sustainable development in the southern Angami region, coverage of health insurance etc.

The purpose of this national seminar was to gather men and women of academia together to discuss and share various issues and insights on sustainable development, the press release issued by SJC (A) stated.
